In 1770 future second President John Adams was the defense lawyer for the British soldiers accused of murder in the Boston Massacre. Although Adams was a strong advocate of colonial independence from Britain, he was an even stronger advocate of due process of law. He believed that the charges against the British soldiers were unjust.
